I live across the river from New York City and on the days I make my way over there, the one thing you immediately notice are the smells of the street. No… not that smell. I’m talking about food.

You’ll find all sorts of vendors selling food on the streets. But you won’t see 20 different hotdog vendors crowded onto one street corner.
Common sense tells you that you won’t make much money when you are competing with a bunch of other vendors on one corner who sell the same thing.
Yet that is exactly what has happened to the internet marketing “how to make money” game.
You are crowded into one street corner trying to sell the same hotdogs as everyone else and you just won’t make much money because their is just too much darn competition.
So then you try to outdo your competitors and develop ways to make your “hotdog” stand out from everyone else. And your competitors catch on to this little trick and they start doing the same, making the technique ineffective.
You start offering fr-ee toppings with your hotdog but your competitors then also offer those same toppings and even include toppings that you don’t offer.
You counter that by doing a little tweeking. You move your hot dog stand a little over to the left, and a little over to the right to see if it can increase your sales. But gosh darn it your competitors start doing the same and you spend more time dancing then you do making sales.
You then implant an edible micropchip that makes hotdogs talk… “Eat Me!” but everyone else then does the same thing and everyone’s hotdog talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk. (Ok, I know I am getting carried away here)
But then a light bulb goes off in your head… you start selling grilled hot dogs instead and become a “niche” within the hotdog niche. But then your competitors do the same and that silly street corner just got crowded again.
And in the end… no matter how you cook ‘em, or market them, you’re still trying to sell those darn hotdogs that everyone else is selling.
There is just way too much competition for the average Joe to make any “real” money in this type of competitive atmosphere.
It’s time to find your niche my friend. Forget the hotdog business. While everyone else is slaving away trying to sell hotdogs…
Use the marketing knowledge you obtained trying to sell those hotdogs… and apply it to sell something else instead, like pretzels.
You’ll find that street corner has just gotten a lot less crowded and your making more money to boot. And you’ll be laughing all the way to the bank too as you pass by all those poor hotdog vendors who don’t know what you know.
The money is in the niche…

While I can’t guarantee they will be legitimate, it should give you a place to start. Many of us have seen the stories of college students cashing in with some great idea for making money online. While not every “packaged” idea to make money online will net these same results, its a place to begin.
- Some general ways to earn income with your computer follow:
- AdSense ads on you site. This can generate income, however you will need some traffic.
- AdWords ads on you site. Some people generate opt-ins or leads then turn around and sell them for a profit. This can make money for you while you continue to develop a strategy.
- Become an affiliate marketer. Find companies that will share their profits with you when a visitor from you site buys a product or service.
- You can Blog for dollars. Create a blog around a particular niche, sell AdSense and build a customer base that clicks on the ads you have placed around your site.
- Write articles. Other people will sometimes use article you have written to improve or add to content already on their site. Make sure the content is good and submit the article to article submission sites.
- You could develop one of these catchy “tricks” that a buzz can be created about. Like the million dollar web page I saw the other day.
- You could sell stuff on eBay.
- You could buy and then sell stuff on eBay. I have no idea about this. Maybe someone can shed some light on that.
- You could sell e-books. Many people make money online with their computer by selling e-books about topics that relate to their website.
- You could start a home based business. There are many business opportunities that are great ways to put extra money in your pocket.
- You could save money. Their are many ways to save money by doing things online. Saving money is much like making money.
- You could ask for donations. People ask others to contribute to a worthy cause. You could then allow someone to match a sizable amount of money if you agree to feature their site on your home page.
- You could consult. If you have a unique area of expertise you could leverage your knowledge to earn some extra income online.
- You could be a problem solver. And get known as a person who will know the answer to particular problems that arise online. This is always a good way to find yourself in a money making situation.
- You could do SEO. There are many people who are willing to spend money on search engine optimization. Especially the technical stuff. (off page)
- You could connect people with people who can earn money by working together.
- You could find stuff online. Say some wants a certain kind of wheel barrow. You find it on eBay or a classified and let them know. Mark it up and make a profit from your living room.
- You could find a type at home opportunity.
- You could do bookkeeping work online and get paid for it.
- You could trade stocks. Not sure here. But you can find a way to get started online.
Over the next few weeks I will extrapolate on these general ways to make money online. I will see if I can find experts who have had results in the areas I’m not so familiar with myself. If you have any ides you would like to add feel free. This is an example of a way to earn money online. While it may not make money immediatly, I will be adding value to the market place and that is an absolute when it comes to making money online.

Make millions by working 15 minutes a day while in your pajama’s!
We’ve all heard that before, right?
Since the conception of the internet, savvy marketers have been preying on the average Joe trying every shady tactic in the book to get him to pull out his credit card. The story ends the same just about every time. Joe is now the proud owner of a hyped up worthless product that ends up collecting digital dust on his hard drive.
All joking aside, there are many people making a legitimate full time living in the internet marketing business, and I’m not talking about only the so called internet gurus and scam artists. Unfortunately, the cold hard facts show that 90% of all those that attempt internet marketing end up failing. There are many reasons why this is so and I am going to go over some of the most common ones.
1. Too Much Information
The internet is the information highway. It is truly amazing when you stop and think about it. Ask me a question about anything and within minutes I can have information for you by looking it up on the internet. This actually creates a stumbling block for internet marketers because unfortunately, the internet marketing highway is stretched 1,000 lanes wide with multiple exits and cross-town traffic everywhere. The bottom line is there is just too much information for any one person to digest when entering the marketing field. Everyone has the next great way to make money online, whether it be blogging, article marking, affiliate marketing, squidoo, my space, facebook, pinging, forum marking, email marketing, etc. This is a very big reason why most newbie’s fail at internet marking. It’s simply a case of information overload.
2. Lack Of Focus
Lack of focus actually goes hand in hand with too much information. What happens with many new marketers is because there is so much out there and so many distractions, they end up jumping from one technique to the next and quickly lose focus. They get frustrated and end up giving up. The simple solution to this problem is to pick one technique to get involved in and focus all attention to it. Basically, one needs to become a master in one arena of marketing and needs to tune out all other distractions.
3. Failure To Take Action
Failure to take action is another big mistake as to why internet marketers fail. It becomes a snowball effect. Because there is too much information and because they can’t seem to focus on any one strategy, the easiest way out is simply to do nothing. Many beginner marketers end up spending all their time looking for the next big thing and wind up wasting their time and money with nothing to show for it.
By no means am I trying to deter anyone from getting into the internet marketing business. When done properly and with a focused system in place, it can be a very rewarding and lucrative way to make a living. Again, the key is to pick one technique to focus on and devote all your time and energy to that one area and stop at nothing until you’ve reached a level of success that your satisfied with.
